A Language Laurel in an Engineer’s Cap
By Nandini Naik
Aditi Deo, primarily an engineer, has done her M.A. in
Sanskrit. She received four gold medals in Masters from Pune University.
Recently, she has received Junior Research Fellowship in NET exam – 2019 and stood
30th in All India Ranking! She said that she had prepared very well
for this exam but she is still wondering if she really has received what she
received, and is ‘dazzled’ right now with the achievement. This is the
achievement which would help her receive a fellowship to pursue her research,
Ph.D. and Assistant Professorship in university transcending
all the financial woes.
Aditi lived in a small town, Parbhani, in her childhood and
scored really well in her 10th Board exams. Following the trend
then, she became an engineer as she liked Physics, and not Biology. But she soon
realized that her real interest was in languages. After joining M.A. in
Sanskrit, where she received four gold medals, she felt excited. She exclaims
with enthusiasm, ‘My engineering background definitely helped me become better than
others in Sanskrit. It has given me a better understanding with a broad vision.’
Sanskrit for her is
not just an ancient language or a scoring, ‘Ratta
maro and score karo’ subject, but it has all the streams of modern arts and
science compressed into words. Bringing this knowledge out in the world and
showing people that this does exist, inspires her.
She gets connected to sci-fi books and Youtube videos of 3D
model of the Universe or some Sanskrit text in her leisure time. According to
her, ‘feeling at home in whatever you do or study is success’. When you have
achieved that and made it your day- to- day life; which can also give you bread
and butter as well as entertain you, it is ‘Success’.
Aditi, thus, is a living
example of the message ‘to follow your passion and make it your life –your career’.
